After a peaceful anchor we head out hoping to see a new Spirit bear that was briefly sighted the day before.
It is low tide, this drains by 5 m off the rocks and exposes delicious morsels on the rocks.
We can’t believe it but as we approach the mouth of a small creek, out comes a gorgeous adult Spirit bear ready for some breakfast. We are then given an 1.5 hours of time watching and following the bear along the rocky edge as it scoops up yummy mussels and other crustaceans off the rocks. It even ventures to pulling off a purple star fish off a rock pool and has a good nibble on this.
We are able to get quite close in the zodiac to watch Cinnamon’s behaviour before she slowly goes into the forest for a snooze.
Of course it’s raining, but nobody minds. We take the zodiac into a protected landing where we are in search of more bears at a platform that has been set up by First Nations. The creek by now is a raging torrent and we don’t think we will see any bears fishing, but eventually a black bear comes out to the creek and has a bit of a fish on the creek’s edge. We feel very content with the day and head back to the boat for a well earned dinner.
A gorgeous walk through the aspen forest takes us back to the zodiac.
It’s our anniversary and we are treated with a special clafouti dessert with candles and well wishes from the group.
The next day is a long transfer to where we hope to see some grizzly bears. It remains misty and rainy which makes for some incredible waterfalls on the way.
A short detour in the morning takes us to a natural hot springs bubbling out of the rock. A little spa pool has been built and we all indulge in a lovely soak after a wash down in the adjacent slightly lukewarm pool. Nice and refreshed we can have a good lie down in the main hot spring pool.
When we arrive at this new destination a quick zodiac ride into the estuary rewards us with some harbour seals resting on partly submerged logs and two grizzly encounters surrounded by sea gulls also taking part in the salmon feast. The bald eagles have started moving in as well , so their characteristic cry is the sound of nature in this magical scene.
We are ready to have a well earned rest on the boat after torrential rain in the zodiac.
It’s a great place to call home.
