On our way to Tombstone Park

Mariola, September 4, 2023September 4, 2023

The day begins with another mild sunny day, so I think we should start it with a cold plunge in the lake. I am expecting about 14C in the water.

André thinks that filming me experiencing this, is as close as he wants to get to the water but after my brave plunge he goes in as well singing “ Figaro, Figaro, Figaro “ in a deep Alto to give himself the extra energy boost.

It is so beautiful here I take time out to do my back routine on the picnic table listening to the curious birds above chattering at my funny positions.

Listening to the loon song is extra motivation.

The rest of the day is spent on getting ourselves up the Klondike Highway to the Dempster which leads to Tombstone Park.

The road is gravel with huge potholes for about 150km of the 250km to the turn off to Tombstone Park.

Despite Big Bertha, well…. Being very big on the inside the engine juts right into the passenger side making it a tight squeeze for my long limbs.

Only room for one leg stretched out at a time.

We are keeping our fingers crossed that the self serve petrol station will be open when we get there as we do not want to detour to Dawson City with Big Bertha. The brief moment of signal we get on the way advises that the petrol station may be no more. Luckily Google is wrong, we fill up and are able to get to a nice spot where we stay off grid ready to aim for the Park campground early in the morning. It will be the start of the last summer long weekend, renowned for Canadians coming out to enjoy the last of the summer break hurrah before school goes back.

We wake up to a sprinkling of snow around on the higher peaks, it has been drizzling slightly on the lower elevations, nothing to stop us from exploring. Today we decide to gradually make our way to the far park boundary and Chapman Lake at the 116km mark. Of course…
